Troubleshoot audio and video issues
If you're having trouble with your microphone, speakers, or camera, try the steps below to get things working again.
1. Check your device settings
Make sure your microphone, speakers, and camera are properly connected and not being used by another app. On most systems, you can test and adjust these settings in your system preferences.
- On Windows: Settings > System > Sound / Camera
- On macOS: System Settings > Sound / Camera
2. Allow Root to use your microphone and camera
If you see a message like permission denied by system, or your audio devices suddenly stop working, your operating system is blocking Root from using them. A system update can reset this without warning, so it's worth checking even if it worked before.
- On Windows: open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, then scroll down and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. That last one is easy to miss, and Root needs it because it's a desktop app. Do the same under Privacy & security > Camera for video. Then fully close and reopen Root.
- On macOS: open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and switch Root on. Do the same under Camera for video. Then fully close and reopen Root.
3. Use the correct input and output
Inside Root, go to Profile > Settings > Audio and video and select the correct devices for input (microphone), output (speakers), and video (camera).
4. Update your software
Make sure you're running the latest version of Root, and check for any operating system or driver updates that may affect audio and video.
- On desktop, open Profile → Settings and select Check for updates. When an update is available it shows with a green arrow, and you can install it right there. You can also download the latest version from the Root download page.
- On mobile, check for an update in the App Store or Google Play.
5. Restart Root or your device
Sometimes the fastest fix is to close and reopen Root, or restart your device entirely.
