Permission syncing

Apply the same visibility and permissions to a whole group of channels at once.

Overview

Permission syncing lets channels inherit their visibility and permissions from their parent channel group. Instead of setting these on each channel individually, you set them once on the channel group and all synced channels automatically use the same settings.

By default, new channels have permission syncing turned on.

How it works

When syncing is on

A synced channel:

  • Uses the visibility and permissions from its parent channel group
  • Updates automatically when you change the channel group's visibility or permissions
  • Cannot have its own visibility configured directly

This is the default state for new channels.

When syncing is off

An unsynced channel:

  • Has its own independent visibility and permissions
  • Is not affected by changes to the channel group
  • Must be managed separately from other channels

When to use syncing

Keep syncing on when:

  • All channels in a group should be visible to the same roles
  • You want centralized access management
  • You're setting up standard community areas where everyone participates equally

Turn syncing off when:

  • A single channel needs different access than its siblings
  • You want a private channel within a public group
  • You need a read-only channel where only specific roles can post

Procedures

Disable permission syncing

  1. Right-click the channel and select Edit channel
  2. Go to the Permissions section
  3. Turn off SYNC PERMISSIONS
  4. Set Channel Visibility for this channel
  5. Select Save

Enable permission syncing

  1. Right-click the channel and select Edit channel
  2. Go to the Permissions section
  3. Turn on SYNC PERMISSIONS
  4. Select Save
warning

Turning sync back on replaces the channel's own visibility and permissions with the channel group's. Any custom permissions on the channel will be lost.
