Manage conversations
Keep your direct messages tidy and easy to find.
View your conversations
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select the Direct Messages icon (chat bubble) in the user tray (top-right of the window).
- Your conversations are listed with the most recent activity at the top. Select one to open it.
- Tap Messages in the bottom navigation.
- Your conversations appear in a list, sorted by most recent activity. Tap one to open it.
Conversations are automatically sorted by the timestamp of the most recent message. When someone sends a new message in a conversation, that conversation moves to the top of your list.
If a conversation has no messages yet, the list shows <Draft> in place of a preview. Conversations with someone you have blocked do not appear in the list at all.
On mobile a conversation slides in over the list rather than replacing it. Swipe right to go back, or tap the dimmed area to the side. From the Messages list, swipe left to jump straight back into the conversation you had open last.
Find a conversation
- Desktop
- Mobile
Scroll the Direct Messages list to find the conversation you want.
- Tap Messages in the bottom navigation.
- Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) at the top.
- Type a name into the Find a conversation field.
This searches the names of the people in your conversations, not the messages inside them. To search message text, use Search a community.
View conversation details
See who's in a conversation and access conversation options.
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Open the conversation.
- Select the Options icon (three vertical dots)
- Select View details. The details panel shows conversation members, pinned messages, and other options.
- Open the conversation.

- A details sheet appears. Tap the row showing how many people are in the conversation to expand the list, then tap anyone to open their profile.
The sheet also has Pinned messages, Add members, and Leave.
Leave a conversation
Leaving a conversation removes it from your list. For one-on-one conversations, your message history is deleted. For group conversations, the conversation continues for other members.

- Mobile
- In the Direct Messages list, right-click a conversation.
- Select Leave direct message.
- In the confirmation dialog, select Leave to confirm.
- Open the conversation you want to leave.
- Tap the conversation name at the top to open conversation details.

- A Leave conversation confirmation appears, warning that it cannot be undone. Tap Leave.
For group conversations, see Group conversations for more details.
Pin a conversation to the tab bar
Pinning a conversation adds the entire conversation as a tab in your tab bar for quick access. This is different from pinning individual messages within a conversation.
Pinned conversations appear as tabs alongside your community tabs, so you can open them with one click.
- Desktop
- Mobile
To pin from the conversation list:
- Select the Direct Messages icon (chat bubble) in the user tray.
- Right-click the conversation you want to pin.
- Select Pin to tab.
To pin from an open conversation:
- Open the conversation.
- Select the Options icon (three dots) in the conversation header.
- Select Pin to tab.
The conversation appears as a new tab in the tab bar.
Once a conversation is pinned, you can pop it out into a separate window. It is handy for keeping a chat in view while you work in another community.
- Right-click the conversation's tab in the tab bar.
- Select Open in new window.
Pinning to the tab bar is the only route to this. A conversation that is not pinned cannot be opened in its own window.
Pinning conversations to the tab bar is not available on mobile.
Unpin a conversation from the tab bar
Remove a pinned conversation from the tab bar when you no longer need quick access to it.
- Desktop
- Mobile
To unpin from the conversation list:
- Select the Direct Messages icon (chat bubble) in the user tray.
- Right-click the pinned conversation.
- Select Unpin from tab.
To unpin from an open conversation:
- Open the pinned conversation.
- Select the Options icon (three dots) in the conversation header.
- Select Unpin from tab.
You can also close the tab directly from the tab bar to unpin the conversation.
Pinning conversations to the tab bar is not available on mobile.
