Start a conversation
Start a private chat with anyone, outside of any community.
You can format your messages (Markdown, code blocks, mentions, etc.). See Format messages for full formatting options and examples.
Start a direct message from a community or channel

- Select a member's avatar from the community member list or a channel message to open their profile card.
- You have two options:
- Type a message in the message area and press Enter to send. A direct message conversation opens.
- Select the Send message (chat bubble) icon in their profile card to open a conversation.
- In the member list, tap a user's name to view their profile.
- Tap the message icon (chat bubble). It sits in a row of icons near the top of their profile, alongside the call and add friend icons.
- Type your message and tap the Send icon (paper airplane).
The icons have no text labels, so go by the chat bubble shape.
Start a direct message with a friend

- Mobile
- Select the Direct Messages icon (chat bubble) in the user tray (top-right of the window).
- Select the Create direct message button (plus sign).
- Search for a friend by name.
- Select the friend to start a conversation.
- Tap Messages in the bottom navigation.
- Tap the + (plus) icon. A screen headed Create opens.
- In the Search friends field, find a friend and tap them. A checkmark appears next to anyone you pick.
- Keep tapping if you want to include more people. See Group conversations.
- Start typing your message.
The conversation is created when you send your first message.
