Organize friends

Sort your friends into groups to keep your list organized.

What are friend groups?

Friend groups are custom categories you create to organize your friends list. By default, all friends appear in a single list. Friend groups let you sort friends into meaningful categories, such as "Gamers", "Colleagues", or "Family".

Every friends list has a default group that cannot be renamed or deleted. New friends are added to this default group automatically. The default group is tagged next to its name, as "(Default)" on desktop and "(default)" on mobile.

Group names must be 2 to 256 characters and can contain letters, numbers, a single space between words, or a single apostrophe. If a name doesn't meet those rules, Root shows the reason below the field and the confirm button stays greyed out until you fix it.

How friend groups work

Friend groups help you:

  • Categorize friends by relationship, activity, or any criteria you choose
  • Collapse sections to focus on specific groups
  • Reorder friends within and between groups using drag and drop

Every friend must belong to exactly one group. There's no "delete" or "remove" that takes a friend out of all groups. When you move a friend to a different group, they leave their current group automatically. To change which group a friend is in, drag and drop them into the target group.

Create a friend group

  1. Select the Friends icon (person silhouette) in the user tray.
  2. In the Friends panel, do one of the following:
    • Select the Create friend group button (folder with plus) in the top-right corner.
    • Right-click anywhere in the panel and select Create friend group.
  3. A new group named "New Group" appears at the top of your friends list.
  4. Right-click the group name and select Rename to give it a meaningful name.
  5. Press Enter to save the name.

Rename a friend group

You cannot rename the default group.

  1. Select the Friends icon (person silhouette) in the user tray.
  2. Right-click the group you want to rename.
  3. Select Rename.
  4. Type the new name.
  5. Press Enter to save the name, or press Escape to cancel.

Delete a friend group

When you delete a group, all friends in that group are automatically moved to the default group. They are never removed from your friends list. You cannot delete the default group.

  1. Select the Friends icon (person silhouette) in the user tray.
  2. Right-click the group you want to delete.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Collapse a friend group

Collapse a group to hide its friends and shorten the list. The arrow next to the group name points down when the group is open and sideways when it's collapsed. Collapsed groups stay collapsed until you open them again.

  1. Select the Friends icon (person silhouette) in the user tray.
  2. Select the group name, or the arrow next to it, to collapse the group.
  3. Select it again to expand the group.

  2. Drag a friend from their current position.
  3. Drop them into the target group or to a new position within the same group.

  2. Drag a group header to a new position.
  3. Drop it where you want it in the list.
