Set up Root the way you like it.

What are settings?​

Settings let you control how Root looks, sounds, and behaves. You can adjust how the app appears, set up your audio and video devices, and control when and how you get notifications.

Settings apply to your account and sync across devices where you're signed in, though some device-specific options (like which microphone to use) are stored locally.

How settings work​

Root settings are organized into categories:

  • User profile covers your account itself: editing your profile, changing your email or password, passkeys, and deleting your account
  • Privacy controls who can send you friend requests, direct messages, and community invites
  • Blocked users lists the people you have blocked, so you can unblock them
  • Passkeys lets you sign in without a password, and manage your recovery codes
  • Audio and video lets you choose your microphone, speakers, and camera on desktop. On mobile it holds noise suppression, and you can change your audio output during a call
  • Chat controls how messages behave, like tap to reply and emoji conversion
  • Notifications determines when Root alerts you about new messages, calls, and other activity
  • Theme controls visual options like light or dark theme
  • Keybindings (Desktop only) lets you customize keyboard shortcuts for navigating and using Root
  • Streamer mode (Desktop only) protects your privacy while streaming or recording by hiding personal information
  • Windows (Windows only) controls Windows-specific behavior like minimizing to the system tray and middle-click scrolling
  • Game overlay (Desktop only) displays voice and chat information on top of fullscreen games
  • Advanced (Desktop only) controls developer tools and display behavior like developer mode and smooth scrolling

On desktop, open settings through your profile picture in the user tray. On mobile, tap the Profile tab and then Settings. Changes take effect immediately unless noted otherwise.

The mobile settings list is shorter than the desktop one. Anything marked Desktop only above will not appear there.

When to change settings​

Adjust your settings when you:

  • Set up Root for the first time to configure your audio and video devices before joining a call
  • Switch environments and need to change from speakers to headphones, or adjust for ambient noise
  • Find the display uncomfortable and want to switch themes or adjust the zoom level
  • Get too many (or too few) notifications and want to fine-tune what alerts you receive
